Jyotendra Lallubhai Mehta

Gen 5 - 1893-1977 (84 years)

Jyotendra, known as Khandubhai, was the second son of Lallubhai and Satyavati. He was a business leader, and an equally accomplished painter. However, unlike both his brothers, he remained out of public life.  And is remembered as the most generous and loving person by everyone in the families.

  • Educated in Botany at St. Xavier's College, Bombay

  • An avid enthusiast of astronomy, painting and sports

  • Co-founder and chair of Union Co-operative Insurance

  • Director and chair of several firms including Bombay Life, Hindustan Construction Company (HCC), Premier Automobiles and several others

  • As Chairman of HCC, the Koyana Dam (the largest hydroelectric power plant in India) was built under his leadership (1956-64)

  • President (two terms) of the Andheri-Vile Parle Borough Municipality

  • A paddle-tennis champion at the age of 65

  • A co-founder, patron member of the Andheri Recreation Club, Bombay (1970)
